If you want an MRI or got cancer in your thigh, then gadolinium is for you, because it's malleable to.

Discovery

Gadolinium, is obtained by separating gadolinite. Gadolinite is the oxide of gadolinium, and was separated by Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac in 1880. After separating it, he had made the discovery of Gadolinium  Named after Gadolin, a Finnish chemist, Gadolinium was also isolated from Carl Gustaf Mosander’s yttria in 1886.

Uses

When it comes to Gadolinium, its used in more places then one would expect. Gadolinium can be found as “Gadolinium yttrium garnets” in microwaves. In color televisions, gadolinium compounds are used as phosphors. Used in alloys a small amount(as little as a single percent) improves the workability and resistance of alloys like iron and chromium to high temperatures and oxidation. When used in Nuclear Fission, it is used to block Neutrons.

Properties

This rare-earth metal is silvery white with a metallic luster and a density of 7.9 g/cm3. Also it is malleable and ductile. Metal at 2394 Fahrenheit and boiling at 5923 degrees Fahrenheit, Gadolinium is a solid up until extreme temperatures. When left at room temperature Gadolinium is stable for the most part, but it tends to tarnish in moist air. Also Gadolinium is toxic, so it wouldn't be pretty if you ate it.

When Gadolinium was discovered, so were a few other elements, and Samarium is of them.
