Radioactivity is my thing, i'm silvery-white and got a lot of bling. 1789 I was discovered named after Uranus when i was uncovered. I am a metal found in pitchblende along with Zinc and Iron is where I fit in.

Uranium is a silvery-white metal that’s also really dense. It is more plentiful then mercury and silver. Uranium is also ductile and malleable.The Elements that Uranium combines with are nonmetal such as Oxygen, Sulfur, Chlorine, Fluorine, Phosphorus, and Bromine. Uranium also dissolves in acids and reacts with water. When forming compounds it turns a greenish-yellowish color. Uranium is the heaviest element found in nature. It most commonly found in pitchblende, carnotite and uranintie. It’s can also be found in phosphate rock and monazite sands. 1% uranium oxide and dating back to 79 A.D., has been found near Naples, Italy.

This element was discovered by Martin H. Klaproth in 1789. He found it in a mineral called pitchblende. Pitchblende is black and a form of uranium-oxide. It is one of the primary mineral ores of Uranium. It's also a variety of uraninite. It was named after the planet Uranus since the planet was discovered in 1781 eight years before the element. However its radioactivity wasn’t discovered until 1896. Later a French chemist by the name of Eugène-Melchoir Péligot isolated uranium by heating it with potassium in platinum crucible. When scientists studied Uranium they discovered that it’s half like if 4.6 billion years.

Uranium is the heaviest atom found on earth. It’s commonly found in Canada, France, Blind River, Colorado, Australia, and South Africa. Pitchblende was a mixture of Zinc and Iron. He announced the black crystals at the bottom of the crucible were two small pieces of metallic Uranium. This element is more common then Tungsten, Beryllium and molybelenuim which happen to be very plentiful. One of the by-products of the use of Uranium is Plutonium.
Uranium is radioactive therefore being a hazard alone. Radioactive material can cause cancer, and is harmful in other ways. Radioactivity means spontaneously emitting of radiation. It generally glows green and is very dangerous. When you see a sign of radioactivity (see picture on left) It means stay out and keep away. Uranium has significant hazards. Radiation is usually kept in big yellow tubs with a cross bone sign on it.

Uranium is also used in the nuclear industry. It’s used to generate electricity. It is used in this industry because it has a natural occurring radioactivity. Uranium can sustain a reaction creating heat, therefore making it able to generate. It’s usually sold in the shape of sodium diuranate also known as “yellow cake”. Uranium also gives us nuclear fuel. Uranium-235 which is the only type of Uranium that’s fissionable is not commonly found. Uranium-238 is the most common isotope of Uranium found in nature.
